After KT Rolster played a strong playoffs over in the LCK, which included a 3-2 upset against power-house SK Telecom T1 and a narrow loss in the finals against the ROX Tigers, few expected that any team would be able to challenge them for Korea’s third spot at the World Championship. But that is exactly what happened today in Seoul.
Samsung Galaxy broke an impressive loss-streak – 19 games since 2015, to be more precise – in order to surprise the favorites 3-2 and qualify themselves for the 2016 World Championship.
Samsung delivered an impressive performance, a substantial improvement from the last showdown between both teams, which saw KT taking home an easy 3-0 victory in the second round of the 2016 LCK Summer Split Playoffs. Kang “Ambition” Chan-yong, who is finally going to play at the biggest tournament League of Legends has to offer, was flawless today: not only able to carry on more “conventional” champions, his Skarner in game 4 crushed KT, who seemed unable to play against that pick.
“When I came to Samsung, my goal was to go to Worlds,” said Ambition after the series, “I feel like it’s a miracle for us.”
Samsung Galaxy joins Summer Champions ROX Tigers and Spring Champions SK Telecom T1 as South Korea’s representatives at the World Championship, which will be taking place in the United States in October.
